Below are answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) about Threads of Life and our flagship fundraiser, Steps for Life.

Q: What is Threads of Life?

A: The Association for Workplace Tragedy Family Support, known as Threads of Life, is a national Canadian registered charity dedicated to supporting families along their journey of healing who have suffered from a workplace fatality, life-altering workplace injury or occupational disease.

Q: What is Steps for Life?

A: Steps for Life is a fun 5km fundraising walk to help support families affected by workplace tragedy. Created in 2004, it raises funds to support Threads of Life programs and services for families who’ve suffered from a workplace fatality, life-altering injury or occupational disease. It also raises awareness about the importance of health and safety within workplaces and to the public. It’s a unique way to educate your community about the devastating ripple effects of a workplace tragedy and how we can work together to prevent others from being injured or killed on the job.

Q: Who can walk?

A: Everyone! Families, friends and neighbours are welcome to walk alongside teams from companies, governments, and organizations in a community of support.

A: Association for Workplace Tragedy Family Support, known as Threads of Life, received its charitable status in 2007 (Charitable Registration number is 87524 8908 RR0001). Q: Why is there a registration fee?

A: A registration fee is charged to help offset the costs to run the event which include food, T-shirts and other supplies. This allows the money raised from the walk to go directly to Threads of Life’s family support programs. Please note: Registration fees are not eligible for a charitable tax receipt.

Q: What is the Team Challenge?

A: The Steps for Life Team Challenge is a fun and friendly competition for those who want to demonstrate their commitment to health and safety. Whether you’re a socially-responsible company, a family with a personal connection to the cause, or a community group with a mission, you can join the challenge! For more info, visit Walker Toolkit.

Q: How do I set up and use a fundraising page?

A: Simply log into your participant centre! You will have the link to your participant center in the confirmation email you receive right after you register! You can also choose your community here and sign into your participant centre at the top right corner of your community's page!

Q: What are badges?

A: Badges are a fun way to celebrate hitting a personal Steps for Life milestone! A badge will be automatically added to your participant page for each of the following milestones: making a personal donation, raising $50, $100, and $250+ dollars, reaching your team member goal, and reaching your fundraising goal!

Q: Can I bring my dog to the walk?

At Threads of Life, many of us are dog-lovers too! But we can’t encourage you to bring your dog to the Steps for Life walk, because it could create liability issues. Please check with the venue where you will be walking to see if dogs are allowed. If the venue does permit dogs, and you decide to bring your dog to the walk, then your dog must be on a leash and under its owner’s control at all times. Dog owners will be held fully responsible for any liability that results from their dog’s attendance at the walk. Thank you for understanding.

Q: Due to physical restrictions I can’t walk in the event, but I want to help and participate. How does the donation work in that case?

A: Anyone who attends our event is considered a participant, whether you walk all, part, or none of the 5km route. There is no formal tracking of time. The event is to bring people together for fun and to raise awareness about injury prevention. Any donation is welcome.

Q: Is there a method for an individual (or group) to walk in memory of a named worker
In my company’s case, I think I could get better funding/participation if the walk was in memory of our own worker who died on the job, and was advertised as such within the company. Is a sign with his name on it available through the organization or would we have to make our own and would we be allowed to carry it?

A: Groups are encouraged to walk in memory of family members and co-workers however Memory Lane signs are made at the request of the family, not the organization. If your family would like to honour your loved one with a Memory Lane sign at your local walk, please contact us at contact@threadsoflife.ca or call us at 1-888-567-9490. The deadline to request a Memory Lane sign for 2018 is February 15, 2018. However, if your organization would like to do something in memory of your colleague, this can be done in a number of ways: as a walker, you can create your own fundraising page in honour of your co-worker through this website, by registering to walk in Steps for Life. Once you’ve created your personal fundraising page, simply direct your supporters to donate online through your page. We have also had groups make up buttons, customize hats, etc. If you have any questions though, just call us.
